The only wild Rusa deer herd in New Zealand is located where
we live, the Galatea foothills of Te Urewera National Park.
These deer are smaller than the Red deer and prefer to inhabit
the lower lying areas that have grassy clearings but are generally
thick with scrub and undergrowth.
They are an extremely cunning and smart deer and can crawl
into the smallest of thickets to hide.
Sometimes they will even venture out onto adjoining farmland
on the bush fringes and quite happily graze amongst cattle
herds.
