Lake Aniwhenua | Rangitaiki River | Tributary Rivers & Stream
Lake Aniwhenua is an extremely productive lake for both wild Rainbow and Brown trout. It's open to fly fishing all year and has become world famous as a trophy trout fishery during it's fishing 'booms' where the trout grow to exceptional proportions of up to 18lbs (8kg) plus.
This is one of the few places in New Zealand where you can walk the shore and spot numerous trout cruising throughout the year. Our trout guides have the knowledge and expertise to enable you to confidently fish for these Rainbow trout and Brown trout.
There's always trout fishing action here, whether it be nymph, wet fly, dry fly or spinning.
You can fish by yourself or chose to take a guide to maximize your success.
Lake Aniwhenua is a relatively new lake, only being formed by the damming of the Rangitaiki River for hydro purposes in 1980. The waters encompass 264 hectares and it's been likened to a 'gold fish pond in the middle of the river'.
What makes this lake so special is it's shallow average depth of only 8 feet (2.5 metres). It's not just an early morning / late evening fishery, it fishes extremely well throughout the entire day. There are no hidden depths for the trout to disappear into, thus it's ideally suited to fly fishing.
Light penetration stimulates weed growth which houses an abundance of insect life, which in turn supplies a steady food supply for the trout to feed on. A vital necessity for this self-sustaining wild fishery.

The range of fly or spin fishing for trout here is unlimited. There's always a location to suit the experience. From shallow riffles to deep heavy water, rapids to narrows and wider expanses.
Classed as the most productive trout fishing river in the area.
The wild Rainbow trout and Brown trout populations know how to fight the elements for survival and will provide an angling experience not to be forgotten.

All tributary rivers and streams of the Rangitaiki river are open to fly fishing from October till the end of June.
There are many of them with most head waters originating in Te Urewera and Whirinaki Forest Parks.
They traverse some of the most scenic land in the country. Natural, native flora and fauna provide the perfect backdrop for these pristine gin-clear waters.
The only noise here is nature itself. Bubbling brook sounds, cascading water falls, insect and bird life.
Some streams are strictly seasonal, but others hold resident trout all year.
Guided fly or spin fishing for rainbow trout and brown trout in New Zealand rivers and streams. Nymphing is the main fly fishing method but during the summer months, (December to March) the dry fly rises throughout the day and evening can be absolutely awesome.
