Lake Aniwhenua is a relatively new lake, only being formed by the damming of the Rangitaiki River for hydro purposes in 1980. The waters encompass 264 hectares and it's been likened to a 'gold fish pond in the middle of the river'.

What makes this lake so special is it's shallow average depth of only 8 feet (2.5 metres). It's not just an early morning / late evening fishery, itTrout guides, New Zealand fishes extremely well throughout the entire day. There are no hidden depths for the trout to disappear into, thus it's ideally suited to fly fishing.
